What to install before you land in Switzerland

The eSIM gets you online — these are the local apps it unlocks the moment you arrive.

  • SBB Mobile

The Swiss travel app: every train, bus, boat and cable car under one ticket. Walking-leg routing is so good locals use it as a maps app.

  • PostAuto

The yellow alpine PostBus network reaches villages no train does. Live ETAs are accurate to the minute, even in snow.

  • Uber

Operates in Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne — but Swiss taxis are reliable and SBB usually wins on price + speed. Useful for late-night returns from clubs.

  • Komoot

For via Alpina + Haute Route hiking, Komoot beats Google Maps on cable-car-to-summit routing. Pre-cache the regions before losing signal at altitude.

Free eSIM for Switzerland FAQs by co:sim

Everything you need to know about the free new-user eSIM offer.

Does the free eSIM work in the Swiss Alps?
Yes. Swisscom covers every major ski resort + main valley. Signal weakens above 3,000 m on glaciers and remote trails like the Aletsch ice route — download offline maps as backup; coverage returns at cable-car stations.
Will it work on the Glacier Express or Bernina Express?
Mostly yes. The 8h Glacier Express (Zermatt → St Moritz) has steady 4G in the valleys but drops in long tunnels like Furka Base. The Bernina Express briefly crosses into Italy where the eSIM hands over to TIM seamlessly.
Does the same eSIM work in Liechtenstein?
Yes. Liechtenstein is one of the 33 countries on the free plan — Vaduz, Schaan, Malbun and the Rhine valley all connect via Salt FL or Swisscom FL without any extra fee.
How is coverage in the Gotthard and Lötschberg rail tunnels?
The 57 km Gotthard Base Tunnel has trackside antennas keeping signal alive. The older Gotthard rail tunnel is only partially covered; Lötschberg and Simplon are mostly dark — pre-cache the SBB timetable.
Will it reach the top of the Matterhorn cable car?
Yes. Swisscom invested heavily in ski-area 5G after 2020; the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise station at 3,883 m has LTE. Verbier, Davos, Arosa and St Moritz also stay connected up the lifts.
Who's eligible for the free eSIM?
New users who have not previously claimed a free eSIM. Eligibility is verified at checkout.
Will I be charged anything?
$0 is charged for the free eSIM. A valid card is collected at checkout for verification only — this prevents the same person claiming multiple free eSIMs. You only pay if you choose to top up later.
How long is the free eSIM valid?
Install and activate the eSIM within 30 days after purchase. Once activated, the free plan is valid for 7 days from your first connection. After that, top up anytime to extend the validity — the same eSIM keeps working.
Can I top up or buy more data after?
Yes. Top up the same eSIM with any paid plan at any time — your data and validity extend instantly, no reinstall required. You can also buy plans for any of our 190+ other destinations.
Can I claim the free eSIM again?
No. This free eSIM is a new-user offer, so it can only be claimed once.
How does the free plan compare to paid plans?
Same high-quality network coverage. Paid plans offer more data and longer validity — and you can top up onto your free eSIM at any time.
